mcafee-virus-collection-rate

How many pieces of malware do you think are out there?  McAfee has a pretty good idea now that they have collected their 20 millionth malware sample.  This is a pretty staggering number and is starting to emphasize why there is a switch happening with anti-virus companies to whitelist rather than blacklist files.

By telling you that it took 23 years (1986-2009) to collect this many malware samples you might get the impression that it’s not as bad as it really is.  The more interesting statistic is that up until 12 months ago they only had 10 million samples.  This is a 100% increase in only 12 months of collection.  It comes out to about 27,000 malware samples a day at a rate of 1,100 an hour.

These numbers really help me to appreciate the guys in the anti-virus community and all they do to protect us on a daily (hourly) basis.
