iPhone Jailbreak, Office, and Springboard improvements

Posted by Paul Foty in April 2nd 2009

springboardnormalThe Palm Pre is not the only one getting a lot of attention today, iPhone 3.0 details have also surfaced in an attempt to keep the Pre from taking all the glory.   The first of which is already sparking a lot of debate on the Internet which is regarding Jailbreaking or cracking the iPhones operating system.

Jailbreaking 3.0

QuickPWN has released their iPhone 3.0 Jailbreak and the DevTeam has again refrained from releasing their Jailbreak to avoid the exploit they are using from being patched before 3.0’s release.  This is one of those situations where holding back and not releasing what you have is a good idea and QuickPWN might have spoiled the fun.

Jailbreaking a beta is not a bad thing but releasing your work to the public seems like a poor decision to me.  It is better to wait for the final product where there is less likelihood that your work would be undone and leave you searching for another exploit.   More and more people are relying on Jailbreaks for their phones but not nearly as many are using the beta 3.0 operating system.

iPhone 3.0 Application Increase

One change that is being touted as pretty big is that the application screens on the Springboard have been increased from 8 pages to 11.  Currently users are limited to 148 applications and with 3.0 will be limited to 180.  To me that seems like a lot of applications and it may only affect a small percentage of users but I am sure they will appreciate the increase.  Of course if you are really needing a fix for a better Springboard you could always just Jailbreak your phone.

Office on the iPhone

This is one of those rumors that has been popping up for the last year and it is gaining more steam as Stephen Elop at the Web 2.0 expo hinted it might be coming soon.  One thing is for sure, Microsoft likes to take their sweet time accommodating Apples users no matter what the device is.
