windows-upgrade-chart

The chart above is not overly complex but it will definitely confuse 90% of the people that look at it. This chart is guaranteed to cause some people to criticize Windows 7 regardless of how helpful it is. Basically if you are upgrading from a previous operating system you should do a clean install anyway. Chances are that your old OS was 32-bit and you need to do the world a favor and upgrade to Windows 7 64-bit anyway.

I do agree with Mr. Wilcox that the Windows 7 upgrade scheme is unnecessarily confusing. It is bound to bring the Geek Squad a lot of business on both the installation and data recovery side of things.

If you do decide to attempt a in-place upgrade make sure you backup everything first. They can go very bad very quickly if you don’t know what you are doing or have a critical error during installation. Frequently during an OS installation is when you will find out your machine has bad hardware.

One good thing that is quickly evident from this is that Windows XP qualifies for the Windows 7 upgrade pricing. This is a very smart move on Microsoft’s part as it will persuade many more people to upgrade because they do not need to purchase the full retail product.
