Windows Mobile 6.5 Honeycomb

It is no secret that I am not a fan of Windows Mobile but somehow have had them for many years.  Even with all of my criticisms there are many reasons not to predict the downfall of Windows Mobile.

This past week Apple announced their sales figures for Q4 with 4.4 million iPhones sold.  While that is a very large number somehow Windows Mobile was able to sell over 5 million units.  Microsoft is still a large player in the smartphone market but this next year it will be much more difficult for them.

One of the features that Windows Mobile has over the competition is that version 6.5 will have Cloud services enabled.  It will have the ability to sync to Microsoft’s cloud-based servers, and a user’s PC with services like Mesh.  Microsoft has recently been focusing a lot on cloud based services with products such as Windows Azure to try and gain a good market share in this area to keep their edge on the competition.  This could be a very smart and forward thinking move for Microsoft but it won’t take the competition long to add this type of service to their products.

Either way that this plays out it will be good for consumers to have strong competition in the mobile OS market.
