It is pretty difficult to miss today if you are surfing the Internet, Apple has announced they will be presenting the iPhone 3.0 software on March 17.  Apple being it’s typically cryptic self has not given out much details but the speculation as to what enhancements will be made with 3.0 are pretty much the same thing we have all been promised and are waiting for.

  • Copy and Paste
  • Background tasks from third-party software (was supposed to be in the September ’08 release)
  • Bluetooth tethering
  • Online social profile syncing

Whether or not they will make any of these announcements is not really important.  What is important at least for Apple is that they announce something spectacular enough to take away attention from Palm.  Even though Palm is not out yet people are understandably excited to buy one.

Early adopters for the iPhone will be having their contracts expire soon and it is a perfect time for Palm to try and get them as customers.  This could also be a good reason for Apple’s announcement, they are trying to remind customers that they are continuing to innovate.  The smartphone market is innovating at an incredible pace and I love seeing many manufactures working as hard as they can to innovate and make the best devices.
