UPDATE: IT’S OFFICIAL! The Google Chrome Operating System has been officially announced!

When it comes to operating system news this is a wild one, Google to announce “Google Chrome OS”, possibly as soon as tomorrow!

There has been wild speculation of a Google operating system for a long time but I think most of us were just trying to force Google’s hand on the matter. Ars Technica is the first one reporting on this and they claim that they have at least 2 sources, one from inside the company and another outside the company. Both of these sources are claiming the announcement could come any day and that it will be called the Google Chrome OS.

From the report, and the name, it appears as this operating system is just that, an enhanced Chrome Internet browser. Initially it is believed that it will be geared towards Netbooks which up until this point it has been speculated that Google Android would be the Google OS for Netbooks.

Myself as well as others have been stating for a long time that Internet Browsers are the OS of the future. The operating system lines are becoming less and less clearly defined as our reliance upon the Internet has increased. Google in particular has placed a focus on their “Gears” feature which brings Google applications such as Calendar and Gmail to your computer. These types of features represent more operating system features rather than the standard Internet Browser features of old.
