Adobe may not be an operating system creator but they have a huge target on their back due to how large they have become. One Acrobat bug in particular getting a lot of attention because it is yet unpatched and the user does not even need to open an infected pdf file to become infected.  All that a user needs to do is hover over the infected file and explorer will read the document and then the system will become infected.  Currently the machines vulnerable to this exploit are Windows based and running Acrobat 7 or earlier.

Adobe for years has been working to be more integrated with Windows based operating systems and now it is starting to negatively affect end users.   Many times better integration is a good thing but with something such as a document reader there has be a line drawn in the sand and restrictions made to prevent this type of integration.

The patch to fix this is scheduled to be released on March 11th but most users don’t see Adobe fixes as something that are really important.  Typically most users ignore Windows Updates and only do it when they “have time” if their machine is not set to automatically update and Adobe updates have a much lower priority.   Currently companies like Geek Squad enable Automatic Updates for Windows machines and maybe they should look into doing this for Adobe products as well.
