Microsoft may just have to put the brakes on Windows 7 after a major bug has been found with the finalized RTM version that has been released to computer manufactures. It is a fairly severe bug that shows itself during the last stage of a Check Disk when scanning a secondary partition/hard drive.

To Replicate the Bug:

  1. Open an elevated command prompt
  2. Type in the command “chkdsk /r D:” (replace D: with whatever your secondary drive letter is)
  3. Open Task Manager or other process management utility and monitor chkdsk.exe
  4. During the 4th stage of the scan chkdsk.exe will show a massive increase in memory usage and will eventually crash the machine, sometimes with a Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD)

The results are the same whether chkdsk is executed via command line or via Explorer as the problem is with chkdsk itself. I highly doubt that Microsoft will recall the RTM build from the computer manufactures. More than likely this will just be fixed with an expedited hotfix. Either way this is not news that Microsoft wants at a time when they are so close to the release of the product.
