alp-screenLinux is becoming all the rage with mobile phone and related devices. Google Android and Palm Pre both use Linux and now the guys from PalmSource ACCESS Linux Platform (ALP) have released version 3.0 of their mobile phone OS.  The company PalmSource split from Palm in 2003 and was eventually acquired by ACCESS.

ALP 3.0 is visually appealing with it’s very clean interface and simple design.  As is becoming more popular, the OS has wide support for widgets.  The widget support goes way beyond support into an obsession and possibly even over-implementation.

The OS itself looks good but one thing that is really hurting it is it’s name.  A name is important and while ALP might sound good as a beta or prototype name customers will shy away from it in the market place.  Products like iPhone or Android have good names and customers either know what it is from the name or remember it after they hear it once.
